The $20 ‘Ghost ZZ’ That Made Other Growers Worry About Its Future

A $20 estate-sale find brought Reddit user u/Alarming-World-2652 a plant they called a “ghost ZZ.” Its pale foliage was a striking contrast to the green leaves associated with a standard ZZ plant.

The r/houseplants thread did not settle whether the plant would thrive. Some commenters admired it; others worried about how it could sustain growth. The owner hoped future growth would include some green.

An unusual color is a question, not a care plan

The name in a post does not establish a registered cultivar, stable variegation or a guaranteed outcome. A photograph cannot show how the plant has changed over months. Those missing details matter more than whether the label sounds rare.

RHS guidance on variegated foliage explains the general issue: pale areas can lack the chlorophyll used to capture light energy. That helps explain the concern. It does not let us measure this plant’s chlorophyll or predict its lifespan from an image.

What to ask before buying a similar plant

Ask for photographs of mature foliage and the newest growth on the same specimen. Has the pale color changed? Are green shoots part of the same plant or a separate plant in the pot? Can the seller give the cultivar’s name and show a reliable record of it?

If the answers are uncertain, treat the purchase as an experiment rather than paying a premium for an assured result. A low price does not answer the biological questions, but it may change how much uncertainty you are willing to accept.

NC State Extension’s ZZ profile is a starting point for the species. Our ZZ care guide covers the light and root conditions to assess at home.

Extra fertilizer is not a test for rare foliage

A pale plant is not an invitation to double the feed or keep the pot wet. First establish what you own and watch its growth under appropriate conditions. Our ZZ troubleshooting guide can help separate color questions from signs of root or watering problems.

The owner’s story remains open. Investigate the plant behind the nickname before treating unusual foliage as proof of a healthy rarity.
