Tall stalks and upright growth can make sweet corn look like a candidate for a patio container. The problem appears when ears start forming. Corn depends on wind to move pollen between flowers, and a few isolated stalks may not provide enough pollen for filled ears.

Each silk on an ear connects to a potential kernel. Pollen must reach that silk for the kernel to develop, which makes plant count and arrangement part of growing corn for harvest.
Corn Depends on Wind for Pollination
Corn produces male flowers in the tassels at the top of each stalk and female flowers in the developing ears. The silks extending from those ears receive pollen released from the tassels.
Wind carries the pollen rather than bees moving it between flowers. A grain of pollen reaching a silk allows the corresponding kernel to develop. Silks that miss pollen can leave gaps across the finished ear.
One or Two Stalks May Not Provide Enough Pollen
A container can have enough soil for a corn stalk to grow without providing the planting arrangement needed for good pollination. Corn planted in groups has more opportunities for wind to carry pollen from tassels onto surrounding silks.
For garden planting, corn works better in blocks than in a single row. A 4-by-4 block containing at least 16 plants gives pollen several nearby stalks to reach as wind moves through the planting.
Healthy Stalks Don’t Guarantee Full Ears
Plant height and green leaves show that corn is growing, but they do not confirm that the ears received enough pollen. Pollination happens after the stalk has already put considerable growth above the soil.
Poor pollination can become clear when the husk comes off and sections of the cob have no kernels. At that point, adding more plants or changing their arrangement cannot repair the missing kernels on that ear.
One Container Variety Was Bred Around the Space Problem
Gardeners who want to test corn in containers have an option bred for that use. Burpee’s ‘On Deck’ sweet corn reaches about 4 to 5 feet and can produce two or three ears per stalk.
Burpee recommends planting 18 seeds in a 24-inch container. Packing multiple plants into one large container gives the corn neighboring stalks for pollination without requiring a conventional garden block.
Other Vegetables Need Less Container Space
Leafy greens, herbs, peppers, eggplants, tomatoes, and radishes can produce in containers without requiring a block of neighboring plants for wind pollination. Pot size, sunlight, water, and the mature size of each crop still determine what can fit in a patio garden.
Corn adds another requirement: enough plants in close range for pollen to reach the silks. A pot can support the stalk, but producing filled ears depends on what grows around it.
