String of dolphins is a Senecio plant species. It is a succulent vining plant that has earned its name from its unique foliage. It is similar to the Senecio radicans. But, its foliage resembles schools of tiny jumping dolphins.

String of Dolphins Plant Care

Like most Senecio varieties, the Senecio peregrinus is low-maintenance. It requires basic attention to its watering, light, and soil needs to flourish. Since the sap is poisonous. It is advised that you wear protective gloves when handling them.

Lighting is important for most Senecio varieties including the String of Dolphins. So ensure you provide them with access to sufficient bright sunlight. They can also do well in areas with partial shade or indirect light. But, the light intensity must be bright.

A good idea would be to grow it in the east or south-facing window. There, they can get at least 6 hours of sunlight a day which is important. 

Too little sunlight does have a negative effect on the Senecio variety. The foliage would look leggy and its growth would be stunted.  You can consider using artificial sunlight in areas of low lighting.

The Senecio peregrinus is drought resistant. This is because their foliage can retain water for long periods. As such, limit watering to once a week or once in 10 days. 

This schedule should be maintained for summer or hot seasons. Because of dormancy, avoid watering them in the winter or fall seasons.

Overwatering the soil exposes the plant to root rot. This is a result of fungi buildup caused by excess moisture. 

Use tepid rain water when watering. Tap Water contains chlorine which is harmful to the exotic plant. Try dechlorinating tap water before using it.

A well-draining succulent or cactus soil is best for the Senecio peregrinus. Ensure it is arid to allow air passage. 

If you can’t get access to succulent or cactus soil, you can make your own. Try using regular potting soil in a pot with sufficient drainage holes. Add one part perlite and one part sand to it. 

The soil should range from acidic to a little alkaline. A pH value between 6.6 to 7.5 would be best for the String of dolphins.

The Senecio plant variety is not frost-tolerant. So ensure temperature levels don’t drop below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. A suitable range would be between 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Average humidity level is perfect for the stunning vine plant. By keeping it indoors, you provide the best humidity level for it.

Fertilizing this incredible plant shouldn’t be a regular affair. Over-fertilizing could ruin the appearance of the plant. 

Aim for light feeding at most once each month. Use a cactus fertilizer or a liquid fertilizer during the growing season. But ensure you dilute it by more than 50% before use.
