Most plant parents don’t know the worst places to put houseplants and inadvertently place their beloved plants in a bad spot. To help a houseplant grow and thrive, it’s important to take the time to put them in the right places in your home and avoid putting them somewhere that could damage them.

1. Places with a Draft
Drafty spots are places in your home that are uniquely cold where plants should not be. While they vary from home to home, drafty areas are often found near a window, exterior door, or places where people commonly like to place plants.
While it might seem like a good idea to give your plant some fresh air, cold drafty air or varying air temperature can be damaging to some plants. For best results, place your plant in a temperate area where it can get the same temperature air year-round.
2. Directly Over Heating Vents
Heat vents can damage your plants. Not only may vents be too hot for certain plant types, but the constant air movement can stunt the growth of certain plants by drying out the leaves. Take care to place your plant somewhere where it will be warm but also not in the direct path of the heat vent.
3. Too Close to Other Plants
Plants do like to be near one another, but putting one plant too near another can cause problems. The plant may not grow as well because the other plant is blocking its light, or bugs that are infecting one plant may move to the other, causing further damage.
For best results, place your plant at least one hand width away from other plants to give it space to flourish.
4. In a Room Without Windows
Unless you are trying to grow mushrooms, all plants require at least some natural light to grow, meaning they need to be placed in a room with a window. Avoid placing your houseplant in a closet, pantry, or other space with no natural light.
5. Exceptionally High Spaces
It may seem like a good idea to place your plant as high up as possible, away from animals and young children, however, this makes their care difficult. The highest plants in your home should still be placed within arm’s reach because if you need a ladder to take care of them regularly, they won’t get the attention they need to thrive.
